What are people's thoughts of this area? I'm looking at buying a condo at the Rhapsody (2120 Vermont Avenue NW) or near that area. Anyone live close to this area and what are the thoughts of future development? Thanks.
U Street is a great neighborhood, and the development of that area has steadily crept east. There are now several bars/cafes along 9th (many but not all of them Ethiopian). 11th St. also has new development. That said, the Rhapsody is at the far end of the U St development, in a slightly desolate patch of parking lots and warehouses. I suspect that much of that will be developed in coming years (or at least after the credit crunch passes), but it may take awhile.
To the east, there is supposed to be a new development at Bryant and Georgia called Howard Town Center which would include a supermarket. But again, the economy has delayed that plan, and I'm not sure a developer has been selected. I believe Howard U. owns the tract, which isn't promising, since most of their redevelopment ideas never seem to get off the ground. In general, I wouldn't count on much development around Georgia Avenue for the foreseeable future - it remains a real dividing line in the mid city.
It was a bit desolate when we were there but we do imagine/hope that development will continue in the next few years. We plan on staying for a while. I like the location though, within 15 minutes you can walk to Columbia Heights and the Logan Circle area. Not too far to 395 as I will be working in Falls Church.
The Rhapsody is pretty nice and prices are falling into a respectable price range. Do you/anyone know of any websites that have reviews of condos by tenants/owners?
