I am a single 41 year old female with three small dogs. I will be relocating to the area for a job in DC. Im not familiar with the area yet as I havent visited the law firm I will be working for yet. But I wanted to get some ideas of virginia or maryland suburbs and their proximity to DC to live in and safety is key of course. I will be renting an apartment. If anyone could provide me with some cities to look into, I would appreciate it.

Hello! I'm a single 38 year old female who is moving to DC in April 2012. I don’t know if this will help you any but here is a link to one of my questions that may have some information for you
The closest-in VA counties are Fairfax and Arlington. There's also the city of Alexandria that is its own fiefdom. In MD, the closest counties are Montgomery and Prince George's. My first recommendation would be to take a look at cities along the Metro. Even if you don't commute by rail, living along a Metro line generally brings more development, and gives you greater transportation options for work and play. Scope out the blue, orange, and yellow lines in VA and the red line in MD.
In the No-Va counties and in Montgomery, personal safety is hardly an issue. There are some places where property crime can pop up, but murders and other violent crime are exceedingly rare across the board. Even where some violent incidents have occurred, the population density is such that your personal chances of becoming a victim are slim.
Also, the link above is a great one. You'll see a very in-depth discussion of many of the area suburbs.
Move to North Arlington if you can afford it - it's one of the safest places in the country and very pet friendly - lots of parks, trails, etc.
Falls Church, McLean, Fairfax are good too, but they are further from DC.
