Hello! I am hoping that someone has experience/info about this subject, because I am completely confused. I am moving to SE DC in a few weeks, and am going to be renting a rowhouse. Moving from TX, where we are not deregulated, and I am so confused about who is a good utility company. Does anyone have any suggestions/cautions about electric and gas and cable providers? The rental is property managed, but I also don't know about setting up water/wastewater service.
You don't have much of a choice. PEPCO will be your power company and though you might be able to buy from someone else, I think it will also be a hell of hassle.
Comcast is your cable company but you might (might) be in an area served by FIOS from Verizon, which is FTTP (Fiber to the Premises) service delivering 100mb Internet and tons of TV channels. Generally folks who are on the net quite a bit will jump at the chance to get FIOS over Comcast.
Do you have to pay for water? Usually rentals have that included.
Verizon typically has a deal with DirectTV where you get satellite, phone, and internet all bundled together. I've found the prices to be similar with Comcast's bundle, and unless you can get FIOS there's really not a big difference. I personally had a better experience with Comcast instead of Verizon, but I know plenty of people who say the opposite, so I guess it just depends on your particular situation.
Electric will be PEPCO, and ask your landlord about gas and water. Even if it's not included or already set up, they should be able to tell you where previous tenants got it. Mine is included in my owner's condo fee, so I have no idea.
