Around October I will be moving from Portland, OR to Washington DC to work at Walter Reed hospital. I am 22 years old and know nothing about the city. I will get 1600 a month for housing and I am looking for a safe place to live. Public transportation doesn't scare me and I dont want somewhere, where it would take me an hour or more to get to work. Any help is appreciated.

How long are you going to actually be at W. Reed as many of those folks are moving to Bethesda Naval and Ft. Belvoir. You can find a variety of apts for 1600 all over the area and near various metro stations.

If you want to stay close the base I would suggest shopping around Silver Spring, MD (if you relocate to Bethesda you won't be too far either). If you want hip, urban, and young; I would suggest Adams Morgan or DuPont Circle in DC

Silver Spring is close, more affordable than other areas, as well as, up and coming from a social standpoint. Look around there.

Silver Spring, MD and Takoma Park, MD are good options if you want to stay close to Walter Reed with safe and affordable housing options.
