I'm from New Jersey and seen on the news that DC was basically shut down all week bcause of snow. Was thinking about driving down fri or sat to visit some typical tourist spots like the white house, capital bldg, + Smithsoniun, and walk around a bit. Is later today (fri) a completely bad idea and will those places be closed and would I even be able to drive my car around the city?
You'll be fine. With the exception of some schools, everything is back open today. The main streets are pretty clear after the sunny day we had yesterday. In a week, side streets will certainly be melted. Even if we get another storm Monday, we'd definitely have it cleaned up by Friday.
Parking will be in shorter supply as the mounds of snow melt off the streets and surface lots. Just be sure to have a plan for legal off-street parking while you're in town.
I think you meant today as in Friday the 12th, correct. If it were me I don't think it would be worth it.
Word on the street is that is still pretty painful trying to get around. I think by next week you would be fine. Saturday might be okay as there won't be people trying to commute.
I personally think that you would have a better time if you wait and come when there isn't massive snow mounds and slush everywhere.
I'm not in the area right now, but I would seriously recommend just paying to park at one of the suburban metro stations, maybe in Bethesda or Rockville or Silver Spring and just taking metro in for the day, unless your planning to stay overnight at a DC hotel.
Thanks! Didn't drive down today (fri 12th) because the White House was closed to tourists and may or may not be open tomorrow (didn't check yet). Good advice on taking the metro (which I'm not familiar with) and wondering if the White House, Capital Building, and main Smithsonian museum(s) are within easy walking distance of each other since that's basically where I plan on going. Thanks again.
I drove downtown last night and the street parking was pretty bad.
Most of the main/popular streets are cleared well enough, but there are still many side streets that are pretty rough. Also, the snow plow piles block probably 75-80% of the street parking. There are still many garages open though to park in for $10-20.
If you have another weekend that you could make the drive down, I'd think it may be better to wait a week or so to give them a chance to really clear things out. Some of the side walks are tough to walk on. However, if this is your only chance to go, you could probably get some nice pictures of DC with snow cover, provided the museums are open today to make the trip worth it.
