I am relocating to the DC area in the next couple of months and will be making 60k. Wanted to know if rent will be affordable either in Georgetown or within walking distance within my means. And will I need a car? I am selling my current vehicle.

Anyone?

A quick search of apartments available in Georgetown from Craig's List shows studio and 1 BR apartments in the $1000 - 2000 a month range.

You could probably live without a car, depending on how close you were to basic services (like grocery) and if your apartment and place of work were easily accessible by public transportation. They also have Zipcars/Flexcars (short term rentals) located near some metro and bus stations.

If you'd like to be close to Georgetown but have a lower rent, I'd check out the Glover Park area. It is just north of Georgetown up Wisconsin Ave. The area is nice and safe, and there is regular bus service. Its a bit of a ride to get the the metro, but this is also the case in Georgetown.

Also check out the Foggy Bottom area, home to GWU, but about a 15 minute walk away from Georgetown. It also has a Metro station so will be a bit easier to get around. Foggy Bottom is also in between Georgetown and the downtown area. I used to live there and could walk to grocery and other convenience stores. Very nice, safe place.
