I am in the process of looking for a studio/efficiency in DC. I work in an international organization, in downtown.
I've been told that good & close areas to live are Rosslyn, Cleveland Park and Dupont Circle, so I am looking for some advice in the pro's and con's of these areas.
I am a professional in my early 30s, male, usually work 9-7 during the week, and like relaxing, walking at night.. during the weekends (or thursday), I enjoy going out for some beers, a coffee, some food... etc. I also love swimming, so having an indoor swimming pool nearby would be excellent.
I like the urban feeling (I am ok with walking/using public transport in general),.. at the moment I am staying near Logan Circle (a little bit pricy!)
I am not American, and I guess I would like to live in a "diverse" neighbourhood.... that is, of like-minded professionals.
My budget is around $1300 for the studio.
I will be more than thankful if anyone has some advice!
Of the three neighborhoods you mention, Dupont will by far have the most going on, followed by Cleveland Park and Rosslyn. The wild card with Rosslyn is that it is just a walk across the bridge to Georgetown, which many would consider a major plus.
For walkability, all three of pretty dense neighborhoods, although Rosslyn is much more of an office-centered neighborhood, populated much more with office towers than residences and businesses. That may impact your opinion of the "walkability" of the area.
The Wilson Aquatic Center in Tenleytown opened last year and has been very popular with area swimmers, including DC's mayor. Cleveland Park would be the closest of the three to that, but it's on the Red Line so Dupont wouldn't be a bad choice. I can't speak to the swimming options in/near Rosslyn.
As far as price goes, all of these neighborhoods are going to be expensive. If you find Logan pricey, odds are you will feel the same about any of these. However, you shouldn't have trouble finding a studio within your price range.
Dupont is probably a great choice for you, but you won't find a studio there for $1300/mo. In that price range you are going to have to look at the outer suburbs or one of the areas that have not yet been gentrified (like out by Columbia Heights).
Thanks a lot for your replies. After visiting all the neighbourhoods I have decided for Cleveland Park. I've found a place for $1275/month (furnished) in a condo in Connecticut Avenue, and I am wondering if you know that to be a reasonable price for the area? It is not really large, but very close to the metro. Any idea what is the average studio rent in the area?
