Been lurking here a while but had to reply to this one. Spent the first 51yrs of my life in the Puget Sound area, then moved to Western WI about 5yrs ago w/DH for family reasons.
I like where we are...rural area, lots of trees, small town, low crime...but oh lordy!!!...do I miss fresh fish(cod, halibut, etc), salt sea air(who thought I'd miss the smell of tide flats), and gardening almost year round(I actually miss SALAL, LOL)!!!
There is much more sun here, and less SAD. It can be 10 degrees and bright, bright sun, so there's that. But right now it's in the 20's with a windchill of -30 and tomorrow our HIGH temp will be something like -4 with a windchill in the -20's. There's been snow on the ground since Nov. and it won't be gone until the end of March(unless we have a last dump of about a foot).
What's worse is that we're stuck in an apartment and will be who knows for how many years to come. I doubt I'll be able to return to the PNW until someone can dump my ashes in the sound. I had an idea of what it was going to be like before we moved and I never wanted to be a whiny wiener, but I'd love to go out and actually be able to walk in the rain. When it rains here, it comes down so hard you can't go out in it...you just look out the window and watch the streets flood. Then there's the tornados...as I was telling a neighbor recently...I'd rather have the earth move beneath my feet than be swept away and rammed into a tree any day. And I'd trade ticks for slugs, too!
Thanks for letting me vent.

You miss SALAL???? Now that's pretty bad. I'll go out tomorrow and take a pic for you if you'd like... *grins* How about the huckleberries, blackberries or slugs? Blasted slugs had more of my tomatoes this year than I did... Can't get a pic of the rain for you as they are saying it's going to be dry for the next few days, sorry about that. Oh and just how do you post a pic? I'm pretty 'puter illiterate... LOL

Yeah, Salal(sigh). And blackberries, huckleberries(blue and red), salmon berries, thimble berries. I know I'm pathetic. There are no evergreen understory shrubs here. In the winter you can see far into the forest...kind of pretty but eerie. The Mid-west has its own beauty, I admit. But have you ever had a tick embedded in your flesh? Far creepier than stepping on a slug barefoot. I've sprayed with repellent from head to toe, tucked in my pantlegs and still have found them inside my clothing after a walk in the woods.
I understand about slugs getting your tomatoes(I used to use Sluggo), but sudden hailstorms in August have wiped out my entire tomato patch in minutes. I guess I'm just whining now. I'm constantly weighing the pros and cons of being here. Can't help it, I just miss Washington.
