We are looking into a relocation to the Bellingham area. I have read that the property taxes are high, but just how high? If we have a home valued at $200,000 just what are we looking at for a tax rate? How do surrounding areas stack up? We do not mind living out of town (up to a 30 minute drive time).

On the other hand, what is the rental market like? What is the rent running for a typical single family home in a decent neighborhood? This would include Bellingham and surrounding areas.

Thanks!

Default Bellingham info

We moved up here from CA 3 years ago. We live in a place called Sudden Valley in Bellingham on Lake Whatcom. Homes in our area that are worth $220,000 have annual taxes of about $1,276 on some older places and up to $1,800 on the newer ones.

Rentals for a 3 bedroom any where from 750- 1000 a month.

Hope this helps.

We love it up here.

Thank you so much for the reply, truth be told, the property tax was not nearly as bad as I thought! The rent also seems rather reasonable as well.

Taxes themselves aren't that bad, the rate I mean. But they sure have been assessing some homes really high. A few people I know have been forced out of homes they owned outright because taxes got too high on fixed income individuals. For what jobs pay here taxes, rent, and homes ALL cost too much.
