Hi all, just wondering, what are some of the best Neighborhoods/Areas in Bellingham to raise a family?

Bellingham Schools are very good. The best of them are on the south side. Keep in mind that Whatcom Middle School burned down today sadly. (Near downtown on the north side)

My kids are at Fairhaven MS and Sehome HS respectively. My youngest also attended Happy Valley ES.

Happy Valley is an exceptional school. It's an old building mind you. Needs to be replaced. BUT, and it is a huge but, the staff is exceptional. The parental involvement is unmatched in the district. Now mind you, the district itself has very high involvement.

Fairhaven and Sehome are both equally as good. Wade King and Larabee are also very good. Lowell ES "was" set to reopen next year. My guess is that the fire will change that.

Now mind you, Bellingham HS and Squalicum HS are also very good. I would recommend looking into the specific curriculum offerings of each to measure your comfort.

That said, the southside is a great place to live and raise a family.

Here are the neighborhoods on the southside

Edgemoor.

Good luck. Feel free to PM me with any questions. Know this. Bellingham is a great place to live. Little traffic and a great sense of community.

Sudden Valley is working towards being more family friendly. The community members have worked together and built 2 new state of the art playgrounds. There is also a very active and supportive mom's group and a Shineshine Room for the little kids to get together and play. They have teen movie and game nights at the community center, a 4th of July celebration, a haunted house at halloween and an easter egg hunt. Plus, homes are much less expensive out there. Sudden Valley is about 9 miles from Bellingham. The kids go to Bellingham schools. I know they go to Geneva Elementary and Bellingham High School. I'm not sure what middle school they go to.

Kulshan Middle School.. The kids on the north shore go to Whatcom. (Until yesterday anyway)

Sudden Valley is a gorgeous place, as is the North Shore. Agate Bay for example is spectacular, but it's about 8 miles from town, and 10 minutes to a decent grocery store. Sudden Valley is as well. Summer traffic can also be a bit of a pain.

Hi I'm trying to decide between renting a small old house on south hill, or a larger more modern huse in samish, mill ave. Both have awesome reviews. Any thoughts? Looking for safe friendly neighborhood. Thanks

The South Hill is very nice and often references Lowell Elementary, Fairhaven MS, and Sehome HS. Excellent neighborhood. Very good schools

The same can be said for Samish. Samish however, references Happy Valley ES. Which in my view is the best ES in Bellingham, and also references Fairhaven MS and Sehome HS.

Those are the best school in town.

Generally speaking, the only knock on the Samish neighborhood, is the potential for freeway noise.

You could do far worse than either one.

South Hill houses are VERY expensive. We live in Columbia neighborhood and like the schools over here better. Fairhaven schools are very good academically, but not very inclusive socially (unless your family has some bucks). Columbia is one of the best neighborhoods in Bellingham for kids.

Patently false. The schools are fine. Kids get along fine. My kids aren't "from money" and they fit right in. It's all about how they approach life.

Columbia is a nice neighborhood. But the schools aren't nearly as good as those in the S. End. The numbers don't lie.

But when schools perform far better academically, there's usually several good reasons.
