I don't understand why it fares so well relative to other UK climates, when it has the mildest winters (most on here are cold lovers), and the coolest summers in the country (apart from NI).
It is odd, because its mild and uneventful. Pretty much what most people on these boards hate.
Compare it to how London fared, despite being more seasonal and prone to noteworthy climatic events:
I give the Isles of Scilly a C, for the very mild winters. The record low on Tresco in 1987 (-7.2C) was a freak event that killed many tender palms that had been growing for over 100 years (Nikau palms, Kentia palms) it doesn't normally drop below 0C in an average winter. They can grow plants there that nowhere else in the UK can grow long term...
could they have not protected the plants for that one time ? seems a shame if they're that old to just die in a freak coldwave .
Not really they were really tall & I doubt they thought it would get as cold as it did... Seedlings from the original Nikau palms are now trunking size & fruiting again though
