Rainfall: 52.9mm on 13 days (+13% - dubious, I think the official figure will be ca. 20% higher)
Sunshine: 174.8 hours (-6%)
Here are the figures for Heathrow Airport.

Mean temp: 17.2C (-1.6C)

Abs high: 26C
Abs low: 9C

Sunshine: 173.6 hrs (very dull, we haven't had a sunny July since 2006, the average being 211 hours.)

It was pretty poor for July. Precipitation was average, but the temperatures and sunshine levels were dreadful. A typical July would see 10-11 days above 25C and temperatures maxing around 32C, but this July only saw 3 days above 25C and a max of 26C. It felt more like a typical September and at times October!

Summer didn't fail this year in this part of the country, going along with the same trend for much of our hotter southern neighbour! So I decided to post details.

This July was definitely rather notable one for the heat lovers and on some of the hotter days even I felt overwhelmed (which isn't often for me in my climate ), so I checked Environment Canada for the stats for Toronto.

Indeed, the average high/low was 30.1C/18.7C (86.2F/ 65.7F) -- an average temperature of 24.4C (75.9F). It definitely was one of the hottest Julys I think I have experienced here at all, if not in recent years, even though the last couple of decades in general was regarded for its trend of hot summers, albeit with a string of cooler summers later on in the later half of the 2000s.

Average high: 30.1C (86.2F)
Average low: 18.7C (65.7F)

Highest high: 37.9 C (100.2F) (hottest in a decade!)
Lowest high: 24.5 C (76.1F)

Highest low: 26.0 C (78.8F) (on same day as the day with the 37.9C high; it's got to be one of the sultriest nights in a while too)
Lowest low: 12.5 C (54.5 F)

Precipitation: 32.4 mm of rain (got to be one of the driest ones in a while; no more than a milimeter of rain from the 3rd to the 22nd this month, and there were two days, the 23rd and 25th, with more than 10 mm of rain in a day). The grass definitely dried up wherever it wasn't watered. I think quite a few young/newly planted trees on street sides were dying of drought, and look leafless, interspersed among the greenery.

Sunshine-wise, lots of it. Blue dome skies interrupted only with scattered clouds drifting here and there more often than not. And humidity-wise, this time, the phrase "it's not the heat, it's the humidity" didn't apply. It really was the heat, with the feeling of direct warming from the sun's rays beating down much more prevalent than the sticky, muggier feel of a more typical southern Ontario summer.

Regarding the UV -- I had posted a link earlier this year in late spring on this forum about there being higher UV levels predicted over Canada this summer because of a thin ozone layer over it -- pretty accurate. From memory, I don't think I've ever seen as many high UV indexes before this year. On most days that was sunny/blue dome, or mostly sunny with few clouds it was probably a 9, and several times a 10. I think I even recall a forecasted 11, though I don't know if it reached it. Yeah, I did get burned a few times.

In any case, 2002 was the last time it got anywhere close to this hot, at 30.1C/18.3C , and it was still with cooler lows than this year! 2005 had a similarly hot one at 29.9C/18.3C (that was the year with the most days above 30C with forty of them I believe). Lots of people complaining about the heat all around this summer; lots of people heading to the beach!

August is supposed to continue the trend of being a sultry summer, according to forecasts, though I don't see as many 30C + days in the long term. Probably not going to be as hot as July but there are still some hot days coming.

Still, all-in-all a great Canadian summer, if this kind of weather's your thing!

Nice. I wish we got summers that warm. It sounds like a description of our summer except for the temps, Looking back at Toronto temp over the last 15 years, I see that your coldest July would be as warm as our warmest January.

With July out of the way and by posting this on August 6th. We can now say that almost certainly we won't see a day of 100°F or more this year. Now the bad news, it was a hotter than July month with many more 90 degree days than I'd like and most nights not cooling off into the 50s. While we have more 90°F days this week, I'm hoping by mid-August we start getting some cool fronts, although weak. We started hitting the downhill on temps on July 16th, so from here on out the averages start going down. Hope that's true

Summary: Above average temps, but also above average precip. It's greener than last year.

Interesting. This has been one of the coldest July I remember. Even the news were saying we had the longest cold waves this year in the beggining of july (before the last 2 cold waves).

But looking at the averages highs it doesnt seem that cold.
The average low, on the other hand, it seems colder than usual.
and the record: 30.3 is extremely unusual!, i wonder if the day that snowed in 2007 was as cold as that??

Invercargill recorded its wettest July on record with 186.1mm falling. Previous 172.8mm in 1995 and before this 154.4mm in 1988 so one can conclude July in every ten years, or so, is getting wetter. Running average is 77.8mm.

Your southern neighbor was def hot.

Here are the July stats for Philly:

Avg July Max temp = 91.9F
Avg July Min temp = 72.8F
Mean = 82.4F
Days over 90F = 21, Normal value = 10.3, beat last years value of 19
2.71 inches of rain, rather dry, and well below the normal of 4.35in

Your hot July month of 86.2F/65.7F is lower than our "normal" July temps of 87.1F/69F (new averages from 1981 to 2010)

You would really think it hot being here for an average summer, which we haven't had in the last two years.

And more than 50 hours of sun behind Dunedin. Maybe someone is finally fixing up the claibration of sun reading methods. If so, long overdue. Many wet months there in the last couple of decades have had suspiciously high sun readings as well, badly correlated indeed.
