Not much to say here other than that we were close to average. The month started off dry, but then a massive cold front came on the 25th and brought 8 inches of snow in 2 days. From Accuweather for Denver: "THERE WERE TWO DAYS DURING THE MONTH IN WHICH A RECORD HIGH
TEMPERATURE WAS EQUALED OR EXCEEDED. ON THE 15TH...THE TEMPERATURE
REACHED 82 DEGREES. THIS TIED THE RECORD HIGH FOR THE DATE WHICH WAS
LAST SET BACK IN 1938. ON THE 24TH...THE HIGH TEMPERATURE OF 80
DEGREES ESTABLISHED A NEW RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURE FOR THE DATE."
For precip:"A DEEP UPPER LEVEL STORM SYSTEM BROUGHT 1.04 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION TO DENVER INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT ON OCTOBER 8TH...SETTING A NEW PRECIPITATION RECORD FOR THE DATE. THE PREVIOUS RECORD WAS 0.50 INCHES SET BACK IN 1982. THERE WAS ALSO A TRACE OF SNOWFALL WITH THIS SYSTEM...WHICH WAS THE FIRST OBSERVED SNOWFALL FOR THE SEASON."
Summary: Near normal temps and above average precip. And while sounding contradictory, our first snow fall fell on October 8th, while our first frost was on the 18th. Oct 9th was the first time we hit freezing at 32°F.
That's an incredibly low max dew point! I knew Colorado was dry; but I didn't realize it was that dry. Our average last month was 44°F, max 70°F. We had an 85°F day; dew point 54°F.
You also got a lot more sunshine than us. Only 3 cloudy days...

Judging by these posts, my town recorded a colder temperature this October than Montreal, Winnipeg and Balakovo, Russia (a place 10° further north than me).
Did Winnipeg really record 0.0 mm of precipitation ?!
Mean sunshine hours per day: 4.6
Days with less than one hour of sunshine: 8
Overall, a cool, cloudy, rainy month -- exactly the kind I hate! Rainfall was nearly double the average (an abrupt change from previous months) and sunshine was far below average. Temps were a little below average as well, which didn't help. There were also five days with no sunshine at all.

Drab for sure, but as I have commented earlier, July-Sept sunshine was much higher than average over the great majority of the country, including your area.

I'm surprised you got a frost there... in our equivalent month of April we rarely see frosts.. in April record low here is -3.3°C at the airport and -1.1°C for downtown. What's the record low for October for Christchurch?

I just read we may have a new record low October sunshine total here?
But pleased to see November is off to a pretty good start.

Hmm... I find this surprising given your arctic influence. But I guess we just have higher variability in the shoulder seasons.
This October's low was actually the mildest in five years. The average October lowest min since 1953 is -0.4 C. October's record low is -4.2 C in 1976.
Anyway, I'm fairly confident we've seen our last frost. Shouldn't be back until April.

You do - 141.1 hrs provisional vs. previous low of 141.9 in 2001. Note also that since then apart from 2 somewhat below par totals of 185 & 186 in 2004 and 2005, the other 7 Octobers all had a substantial excess, with the lowest of them (2006) getting 225 hours, and a record high of 272 in 2002. So while this one would be a shock, it was perhaps overdue.
Our MTD sunshine here at end October is about 70 behind the 1971-2000 normal, and for the first time since 1992-3 we may get 2 consecutive years with a significant deficit - quite unwelcome, but perhaps also overdue.
Also to be noted; your record October low is still about 70% of normal, which is quite "high" for a record low in a lengthy record.
