I've witnessed half a dozen of those travelling from Lille to Nice a couple days ago. March is traditionally seen as the month of brief downpours in France, probably because of the contrast between winter's stratiform dominated precip and spring's more convective rainfall. Overall, we're more likely to get sunshowers in spring and summer than in autumn and winter, as they go hand in hand with convective activity.

Quite common here throughout the spring but particularly in MArch and April which are known as crazy and changeable months weather wise and the start of October when Autumn really kicks in

Just had one a few days ago. It's more common here during late spring and most of the summer with scattered/isolated "pop-up" thunderstorms. There's even a silly old wives' tale around here that states that when it's sunny and raining at the same time, it means that "the devil is beating his wife."
ETA: Interesting. Seems there's a lot of folklore tidbits based around this phenomenon:

'Course, you can always find old folklore regarding natural phenomena.

I get them on occasion here, usually during summer and early autumn. For some reason they usually give me a feeling of dread and that something awful is about to happen.

Love the rainbow that sometimes accompany such showers.
