Patricio hit the nail on the head when he proffered that much of the Southern Hemisphere doesn't have a winter. I prefer to call it the 'exercise season', in which one can undertake vigorous outdoor activities without discomfort. This, rather than the traditional winter comrades General Frost and Major Snow, is the dominant characteristic of the season here.
As far as Australia goes, frontal activity has been anaemic, though the "Alps" have had a few scattered snowfalls already. Sydney and the east coast will have a wet start to Exercise with an East Coast Low progged in the new week. This is a kind of winter storm similar to the Nor'Easter in the US, though warm cored and precipitation is mostly rain (occasionally snow above 1000 m). This warm maritime air will make light work of what meagre snow cover there is in the "Alps".
Looking ahead, the predictions are for a warmer than average Exercise in southern parts, heading into a likely El Nino spring and summer. My bet is that it will be a very short cool season this year and we'll be donning t-shirts by mid August . Perrrrfffffffffffffffffffffffffffff may not even see the warmth abate at all .
omg, i call it "running season"!!! Instead of saying winter, i say "running season"! hahaha. Last year, i went running all winter and it was awesome, and had to stop running since october/november came, cause heat and running is the worst combination ever.
Now, with June starting, im gonna start TODAY to go running. I just bought a new pair of running shoes last weeked and im starting today!
Its been actually way to warm in april on may, often hitting the 20s or around it, to go to run. But, today, temp is 16 celsius and its supposed to get colder in the afternoon: perfect running weather!

For me it might also be the "traveling season", because I tend to travel more when it's in the 30's/40's/50's and cloudy or raining.
Winter is ski season for us, although the snow has completely gone from the hills in the last week or so. A great time for walking/hunting in the hills as it's nice and cool. Some of the best surf around here is during the winter months, so hopefully there will be a good amount of days. Rugby season for the kids as well.
Running in the winter is the only way i like to run outdoors. Im glad i have till october to run, after that ill just do swimming.
