What about other than gales? I had thought cloudy winters in the UK, were mainly from lack of "clearing winds"

We do get periods of high pressure with cloud trapped under an inversion, as well as periods of fog, but most of our cloud just comes from the Atlantic, and even if there is a cloudy high, it will still probably be breezy. Calm conditions here really only seem to occur at night.

8.2mph here. Does the New Zealanders understand mph? I sure don't. 8.2mph is 13.3 km/h. Strongest direction being W and weakest N. SW is the most common, naturally.

I thought the UK switched to metric, but they tend to still use miles and feet like we do.

We didn't switch until the 90s, so some things still remain from the imperial measurements, such as miles. Metric is always taught in schools here, so give it a generation and imperial measurements will probably have died out completely. I recall having to do a paper in school about the why people should use metric measurements over imperial measurements - but I don't remember what I wrote.

I was of the generation that started school under imperial and ended on metric. I'm comfortable with both, although metrics is much easier to work with. Average wind speed here in winter is 4mph or 7kmh.

Long-term data for my nearest station is patchy on Tutiempo, with many days missing for some reason, but between 1996 and 2012, the average wind speed was 15.5km/h or 9.6mph (using WeatherOnline climate robot). The windiest month is January with a mean speed of 20.6km/h or 12.8mph. The most common direction was W, followed by S and SW.

The average wind speed offer little variation here as well. The calmest month is August with 11.2 km/h (6.9mph), followed by July and September with 7.4mph. In all these months SW is the most common direction, with S peaking in summer. The windiest months are Dec, Jan and Feb, all averaging the 13.3 km/h (8.3mph), with W peaking and S decreasing. In all 12 months N is the most rare direction, Followed by NE. E and SE are most common in late autumn and February and more rare in summer.
