This is a question I'm a bit curious about. Obviously, thunderstorms are generally quite common in most regions of the tropics. However, from what I've heard (although I unfortunately haven't visited the state yet), thunderstorms rarely affect Hawaii. Does anyone have a good explanation for this? Is it because Hawaii's weather is mainly affected by the trade winds?

The thundershowers are rare as are tornadoes. The reason is that you don't have the contrast in air masses like you have in other storm prone areas.

AKAIK, there are no such thing as cold fronts in Hawaii because it's warm, open water in all directions for at least 2000 miles

Well I have seen a thunderstorm in Hawaii, a few years ago, was sunbathing on Waikiki beach one minute & running under cover the next! Torrential rain accompanied the thunder which gave flash flooding ankle deep within minutes!
