Wow, look at how ridiculous February-June looks sun-wise! The average March high being 4.4C higher than the average April high looks really odd too - bet that doesn't happen too often! (How do you work out the mean? Using (high+low/2) would give an April mean of 5.9, not 6.5.)
Mean temperature: 5.6C (+0.1C)

A cold, dry, sunny first half followed by a mild and very wet second half. A 10-day period around Christmas alone had more than the entire month's average rainfall.
National figures:
CET: 4.7C (0.0C)
England and Wales Rainfall: 170.4mm (+75%)
England and Wales Sunshine: 60.4 hours (+15%)
Same as locally: a cold and sunny first half and a mild, dull and very wet second half. It was the tenth wettest December since records began 247 years ago.

Yes, it makes the chart look messy, and as an OCD sufferer, that isn't a good thing.
Amazing how much wetter it has been nationally than here. All these talks of records, not a single record has been broken here in terms of rainfall (with the possible exception of April).
Rain: 93.9 mm / 3.6" on 22 days.
Most in 24 hours: 11mm / 0.43"
Sun: 48.3 hours, 1.6 hours per day.
Avg max wind gust: 14.6 km/h
Overall a very weird month. A very cool first half and increasingly bizarre and mild second half. Below average sunshine. Rating: 5 / 10 for those nice christmas days but it could have been sunnier overall.

Warm and dry for the most part. The much needed rain came in two brief downpours.

A bit of everything sort of year. Some very dull periods and some very sunny periods. Wet and dry spells. Seemed a bit more thunder than typical. Overall a good year.

In the NZ context, "Dull" doesn't work with your climate. Compared to Perth, yes.
One could call the 35.4 hours Invercargill had in the 30 days 19/5/1954-17/6/1954 dull, or Waimate's infamous 60.4 hours for December 1959, as two very bad NZ examples.
I have some preliminary sunshine numbers for 2012 for a few stations of interest but am waiting for some of the manual ones' data to get to NIWA's CliFlo. However it is already clear that "Fakertane" - despite a relatively modest total for December of 218 (I'd like to think someone had calibrated its instrument back to more sane levels, but that won't be the case, just a cloudy month there) will head off Nelson by about 19 hours (2602 vs about 2583). I'll put up totals for those two plus Tekapo, Appleby and Blenheim in a day or so (those will be the top 5 in that order).
