Latest obs at 1:30am. This is not actually ****ing possible.

The radar shows a tiny shower just to the NE of Melbourne, apparently this is lightning active according to the lightning tracker

I was watching a little of the Australian Open last night because I heard about the heat. I usually don't like or watch tennis (I like (American) football, golf, hockey, basketball, baseball, in that order). It was 102 when I was watching, but got up to 108, I hear. I guess that's just the air temperature away from the courts, because I'd imagine it would be even hotter on the tennis courts themselves. Especially with the sun, it seemed quite brutal. Unsurprisingly, I heard a few players ended up with heat related illnesses. No way would I sit through that if I were a spectator.

^^^ Enjoy while it lasts! If it's going to be hot, it might as well be jaw-droppingly hot beyond anything I can get my head around. Look at that 45 C forecast for Adelaide!

I'd imagine Greymouth on the opposite coast rarely sees 30C.
Probably, although we're now halfway through "summer" and haven't seen over 26 C.

My thoughts exactly. But I'm sure we'll start hearing again how Melbourne is the Reykjavik of the South as soon as the highs drop below 30 C.

Insane temperatures in Melbourne overnight. This should keep the fail whales in Bass Strait for a little while longer :P. As usual, Sydney may as well be on another planet with a comfortable 17C overnight at my local station. We'll cop some humidity though.

Re the thunderstorms, when temps are that high you can get lightning out of anything since the cells are very high based. Fires then become a real concern, so I'd rather not have them if I were in your position.

Record high low is 30.6C .

The overnight low ended up being 28.6C, still damn hot. Laverton had 39C at 11:55pm, after jumping from 29C at 10:30pm!!!!! You can see it in one of the above pics.

I went outside at 2:00am the air felt like a hairdryer and it was actually spitting raindrops. Saw a few flashes of lightning aswell. According to the obs, it was 36C at that time

You can look through the obs here Latest Weather Observations for the Melbourne Area

Adelaide had 45C yesterday, forecast for today is 45C and tomorrow 46C!

Currently 38C /100F at 11am and cloudy. Pretty humid aswell.
