This will hopefully explain things for you:

Cold front - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It is not dependent on air temperature.

Is that simple enough?

This is very true, in NSW they are known as "Southerly Busters" - and are very welcome I can tell you.

The Big Bust - Southerly Busters Explained - Bureau of Meteorology

They lose their clout a couple of hundred Ks or so further north of Sydney.
Where I live , about 20Ks due west of Newcastle Airport they are noticabley weaker than Sydney, and they do not penetrate inland areas to the same degree.
This article gives several examples, there is nothing like a 40C day being followed by a couple of 22-23C days to break the cycle.

It's called Rabbit Island, and the nearest town is Richmond. Water temperature yesterday was 20C/68F due to an extended cold spell over the last two weeks. The summer water temperature would typically be 21-24C and occasionally reaching 27C. In winter it drops down to 13C but 18-C+ days can still be expected until late may.

But we are not talking about different places you dumb ****, we are talking about one place being 30c then the next day only 12c.

Yep I followed the blog. Looks like he had a great time. I would personally prefer a summer visit, but it is still generally pleasant during winter.

Going swimming here (just a few km away) at that time of the year was brave, but I can understand the idea that it just looked to nice not to. The beaches there are completely different to the ones in the photo I posted. This photo shows a typical beach there in mid winter.

We had a nice hot day yesterday with 33 C. Much cooler today with a high of only 17 C and all day overcast. Been very dry so far this month with only 2 mm. That could be set to change tomorrow with all-day drizzle.

Latest GFS shows potentially record breaking heat developing in the week after the weekend. Long way off, but 850hpa temps are predicted to get as high as 32C, which would yield temps close to 50C at sea level. Luckily, it's been on this pattern for several runs now, so highly likely we'll see something.
