There is nothing transitional about it's rainfall pattern -it's very clearly a Mediterannean climate.
It is mediterranean, but in terms of rainfall it is not far removed from oceanic climate. The dry season only lasts two months and there is some rainfall in those months. Would it be considered subtropical?

The same can be said of many Med climates- it's not an Oceanic climate, because Oceanic climates don't experience fundamental shifts in weather patterns.

Yes, definitely.
The change in weather patterns, is fundamentally different to a true Oceanic climate like Motueka.
