I wanted these two cities compared in terms of coldest during the winter months of November-March

I don't know much about weather other than the temperature. So, I'm asking others if determining the coldest of the two is simply looking at the temperature.

From my research the average high and low during those months are as follows.

Minneapolis is to the left and Chicago is to the right.

Average High
Nov 41---49
Dec 27---37
Jan 24---32
Feb 29---38
March 41---47

Average Low
Nov 26---35
Dec 12---24
Jan 7---18
Feb 13---24
March 24---32

A person from Minneapolis would laugh at at someone who suggested that Chicago has "cold" winters

chicagogeorge,

I really appreciate your response and found your graphs to be informative.

I am interested in Denver too. Would you have a chart for them similar to the two you posted above?

Denver is much milder than both cities in the winter, with many more days in the 50s and 60s (even an occasional 70 degree day in January isn't unusual) however, due to it's higher elevation it's more prone to late season snows (think of snows in late April/early May aren't too unusual in Denver) and summer nights are cooler than in both cities, but since it's dry the daytime highs are a bit higher as well (July avg. highs are around 88-90 F). Denver is more prone to extreme temperature swings but Minneapolis and Chicago are no slouch in that department either. Hope that helps.

I vote Minneapolis just cause its closer to the north pole.. though when I've been to Chicago.. that great lake does seem to bring the chill

Yep, having lived in Denver the one thing to watch out for is the over reaction of snow.. lol

Lake Michigan can bring dramatic cooling effects on the city when winds flow onshore during the spring.

Even in the summer....

Okay, so I have seen the numbers for Chicago and Minneapolis and know Minneapolis is colder. Now onto comparing Chicago to Denver......

When comparing Chicago to Denver I am confused. For every single month Chicago has a lower temperature for "average high". For every single month Chicago has a higher temperature for "average low".

I'm thinking the "average low" is more important when factoring in what city is colder? If that's the case then Denver is colder.

Depends. Ft. Lauderdale has a lower average low than Hong Kong, I wouldn't consider it colder.
