Something doesn't add up.
The average high doesn't pass 20C until a week or so into June. By the end it's around 22C.

Because the monthly high is not reflective of the whole month. It doesn't suddenly change once the 1st of each month comes around.

e.g The start of September averages about 22C, by the end it is about 18C which gives our average for the month of 20C

Those winters you listed above are they the coldest ever based on available data? I must have mis-read the above post by Rozenn to mean 1981 to 2010.

The ones I listed are the coldest in Southern Finland since 1900.

I've heard about this winter before. It was even referenced in a song from the 1980's by Dream Academy titled "Life in a Northern Town"

He said in winter 1963, when it felt like the world would freeze...

How cold was that winter in the UK? What was the ultimate low in a place like London?

Pot meet kettle. You love to exaggerate how cold the UK is, when it isn't as cold as where I live in winter. Our avg low is 10F (5.8C) less than London in January. Our avg high is around 6F(3.4C) less.

He does love to think that Ireland is some sort of subarctic Island that gets regular cold. In reality, it is a worse, more oceanic and gloomy version of the mainland UK

Heathrow
mid-Apr: 14.2
mid-May: 17.9
mid-Jun: 21.0

The warming slows down in June, but is constant throughout April and May. If you add up the 30 year average for 31st May from Tutiempo, you will get a figure of 20.2C.

Here are the averages for the 1962/63 winter at Heathrow. Incredibly severe as you can see. It was the 3rd coldest winter on the CET record (after 1683-4 and 1739-40), and the coldest since national records began. January 1963 was the coldest month of the 20th century.

Dec: 5.0/-1.1
Jan: 0.8/-4.6
Feb: 2.8/-2.2

The coldest temperature in the London area was recorded at Gatwick, -16C. The lowest temperature in London was -9.7C.

Just to put that winter into perspective. If those anomalies were positive and recorded in summer, it would give the following values.

Jun: 24.3/15.5
Jul: 30.8/20.8
Aug: 28.8/18.0
