As a rule, the ice in the KC area usually doesn't hit until January/February. This is an early ice storm, and the predicted worse of it will be Monday/Tuesday. And exceptionally cold for December.
The ice is very dangerous, and I don't find it pretty at all. Since we can't all fly south for the winter, all we can do for now is be as careful as possible, stay indoors if we can (ha, ha..would be nice if I could!), drive carefully, use 'ice grippers' on our shoes to avoid slipping on the ice, at home make sure we have food to eat, plenty of warm clothes and blankets if the power goes out, and flashlights. And just pray this isn't a preview of the 2007-2008 winter season!!
I hope that all of you further south are staying safe and warm. I was just telling someone in a DM that when I watch TWC and see ice or snowstorms in certain areas, my thoughts go to the members from here that live there. You don't think I'm a CD addict, do you?
Seriously though, ice storms are horrible. There are just so many car accidents and people falling and breaking things and the power outages are awful this time of year.
I am not at all pleased at the potential major ice storm for the KC area on Tuesday It just has to be freezing rain instead of snow, rain, or even sleet. This storm could cause huge problems because the computer models are predicting over an INCH of ice for Tuesday. Temperatures will likely below 30F during the icing event. This will cause huge disruptions for everyone has well as the potential for power outages. Hopefully the forecast will offer better news tommorrow, but it does not look good at all right now.
Nameless, How are you doing up there so far? As of 7:30am we are 28F with a thin sheet of ice coating everything. heh... Just heard the news guy say with the wind chill, feels like 18F.
You missed me this morning. I had been at work 2 hours. The roads looked damp when I headed out very early this morning but there was some light icing. Which I experienced as I turned corners and almost fishtailed.
I walked out to my truck when I get off at 3 this afternoon and there was probably 1/4 inch of ice caked on. So then it took 15 minutes to find someone with an ice scraper and another 15 to clear it.
We got some sleet mix so the ice isn't weighing anything down, yet. Roads melted some this afternoon but are freezing again with sleet as I speak.
