The highest it gotten in Sydney CBD (Observatory Hill) was 45.8C (114.4F) and the highest in Los Angeles (Downtown) was 45C (113F). Obviously Sydney's got the higher temp, but extremes can happen anywhere - So...can Sydney or LA reach 50C/122F?

Do NOT count the metropolitan areas - FYI, Sydney's west has reached (47.8C/118F - Richmond) and the more inland parts of LA have also soared up to a similar temp of 47C/116F (San Fernando Valley). Let's stick with Downtown LA and the Observatory Hill...

LA by far... LA and California has microclimate (the more inland the warmer, the closer to the ocean the cooler).

LA has more diverse and varied temperatures day by day than Sydney.

L.A in September during a strong Santa Ana wind event. It could happen this year.

Im gonna say both are impossible...sydney just has too much moisture and not enough heat to allow that kind of extreme. WHile it can get hot eastern winds it 50 C is too much. As for LA... there is also no way because even inland desert locations such as Palm springs only has a record high of 51C (123f) There is no way LA can set a record high as hot as palm springs...

Not impossible but highly unlikely which is as good as impossible.

L.A gets bone dry humidity (1-2 percent) during Santa Ana wind events that allow more daytime heating than Sydney. It could happen this year. I don't think Sydney can get humidity that low.

Higher or lower temperatures are easier to accomplish when there's less water in the atmosphere so LA is more likely to reach 50c.

Both impossible unless an LA quake causes ground combustion and count that
