early October warm spell during the Chicago Marathon in 2007 sent hundreds of runners to the hospital

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/10/08/us...anted=all&_r=0

A minimum of 70F/21C in October is impressive for Chicago

Warmest October was in 1963 average high was 23-26C across the metro area with Chicago/MDW reaching a max of 94F/34C, and the far southwest outlying suburbs hit 95F/35C

Coldest October was 1917 with an average max of 11C. At the end of the month, the Chicago station (located right on the lakeshore in the Loop) recorded a high of 28F/-2C and a low of 23F/-5C. Some suburbs recorded lows of 15F/-9C

Off the top of my head, I can remember a widespread thunderstorm event here in October of 2006, the remains of typhoon Melor in 2009, and multiple Santa Ana winds and heat different years but nothing really to write home about.

This October so far has been the warmest at my local weather station since records began in 1970, with an average max of 21.9°C when the normal average is around 19.7°C. Doesn't seem like much, but with a warm end to the month, the average could easily creep over 22°C.

October weather in here can vary pretty much-although not as much as April weather can. There have been Indian summers in the first part of October with above 20 c temps and sunny weather and as well some sudden snowfalls as was told before. Even the current very date- 27th October - has quite a variable historical temperature records - from +17.9c as a warmth record to -12.5 as a cold record.

Three major events come into my mind here:

24th October 2003: Earliest settling snow ever in Bremerhaven, snow cover was 2-3 cm (1 inch) in the morning, thanks to continous snowfall and temperatures below zero until the late afternoon hours, the snowcover remained throughout the day in most places.
That day also had the lowest October daytime high ever peaking at just 1.1°C (34°F).

1th October 2011: A very late unseasonable summer day, at the official station a record high of 25.9°C (78.6°F) was reached a whole 2°C or 4°F higher than the previous alltime October high.
It was even hotter in the city of Bremen, here the mercury even peaked as high as 28.6°C (83.5°F).

And just recently on 28th October 2013: A short lived hurricane (Orkan) swept through the city in the noon hours of the day, bringing gusts up to 130 km/h / 81 mph luckily no injuries and only minor damage to the city as uprooted trees in parks or bent signposts.

Yup, remember this. Helsinki recorded 21.7C on 30 September, just one day later it would've been the all-time record for October. Turku hit 20.9C and I remember sipping a beer on a patio in short sleeves as it was Friday. On the 1st of October we were down to 17C.

Yeah that day was pretty nice. Even drove to a beach resort in the afternoon and took a short swim in the then 15°C warm/cold sea, was quite refreshing.
