Crazy! 70% of heating oil is transported to the Northeast on the Hudson. There's 1.5 feet thick of ice in spots. They have barges breaking the ice up and down the river.
"On deck it was hard to remember it was a boat, that this tundra was a river. No water gently lapped against the hull; the boat did not rock with the wind and the waves. Two foxes ran in front of the bow.
Everything was cold, white and quiet"
Recent snow melt and mild temperatures have resulted in water runoff into the river systems. With thick ice across many, some of this ice has started to break up and then pile up at bends or bridges along the rivers' course. This ice jamming can lead to widespread flooding if they persist for a period time.
Currently - ice jams have been reported along parts of the Black River in Clark County, WI. While there has been minor low land flooding reported - no flooding into residential or other areas has been indicated by law enforcement or emergency management. A Flood Watch is in effect for a section of the Black River to account for this ice jam threat.
