Pretty amazing thing I found. Since records started in 1948 25 of 65 years, at the CT coast, December had less than 3.5” of snow. Not including this year.. yet. This year we have 0.7".

Of those 25 years, 23 of them ended the season at or below normal. Only 1 well above normal (1993-94)

Going further, of the 21 that ended up below normal, They all stayed under 2 feet of snow.

Now of course even if we end up below normal at 20” that could mean 2 blizzards or a bunch of small snow events totaling 20”. But the odds are very slim to get an above normal season if BDR doesn’t get 3” more before January 1st. 6 days left.

Lastly, before 2011-12, last time we had under an inch in December was 2001-02.

Wondering how other locations look when December snowfall is less than a certain amount.

Hmm. I was thinking you shouldn't be that worried, as December isn't that reliable of a snow season. Maybe ocean cools down, some of the rain events we've getting if they continue will be snow.

Curious how the temps were for those years?

Here’s a look at the temps at BDR after a < 3.5” December snow total.
  • Looks like February with a better chance of deeper negative anomalies. Only 6 of 26 times January was colder than -1 below normal. February with 11.
  • Past 4 times have been brutal with warmth.
  • January 1950 stands as the warmest January on record still but thanks to Feb 1950 that winter was saved from being a torch
  • 1993-94 temps were very impressive after the 1.9” of snow in Dec 1993. Dec Avg was just normal.
Let me know if you see anything else with this.

Need more?

NWS Boston posted this. Only 5 of 26 yrs ended up at or above normal with season snowfall when having less than 3" by New Years Day.

Cool find by Barry. Only 1 other season where November had more than 1" of snow while December had less than 1". That yr also a well below normal yr.
