I live in east TX, and I readily admit to being EXTREMELY grumpy about the weather. very very nit-picky. Most of all, to me the calendars are GOD, they should dictate to the nth degree what the weather is. You should NEVER have 70'F days in December or 45'F days in May, unless you're in Australia, ever ever ever, not even 1 day out of 35,000. EVER.

To that end, I am getting really tired of the more extreme versions of winter showing up right at the tail end of the season, and it makes no sense to me. Now, granted, we are still in the winter season, it's not spring yet, so yes it's still going to be coolish (again, the calendar is God), but I'd expect that in late February the cold starts winding down a bit, to where you definitely shouldn't be seeing the extreme hard-freeze warnings and snow-ice storms etc. That's the sort of thing you figure on seeing in December or January, and maybe the early parts of February. But to see such in the last part of February heading in March? I can't help but go "where have you been the past 2-odd months? You wait until NOW to start with this?"

Has it always been this way, and I just never noticed?

No two seasons have ever been alike. Interestingly, back 50 years ago December was the warmest winter month, and now it is the coldest winter month (in my area of the world).

This current February is going to go down as one of if not the warmest winter months on record around here.

This 2014-2015 winter will also be one of the warmest in the PNW...

It definitely feels like the "worst of winter" here in Denver right now. We just had 2 weeks with highs in the 50s - 70s. Right now, we don't even have a high of 50 in our extended forecast

Denverian, I would gladly change spots with you in geography this winter in indianapolis has been bearish with lots of cold air for February and for January but nothing like the record snow indianapolis saw last winter, nor has the cold been as intense at least not as intense in indianapolis this year so far, I am dying for spring to come but all forecast indicators are pointing towards wintry conditions into the month of March.

Not sure what the deal is this winter. I think maybe it has something to do with the volcanoes in Iceland acting up? (Don't quote me on that)

It is interesting how this so-called "Siberian express" has been hitting eastern North America. PM Harper has been very strident in his support for Ukraine (large Ukrainian population in Canada & an election is coming up) and Obama publicly at least has been critical of Putin and is working to ruin the Russian economy. I seem to recall the Soviets claiming (among other lunacies) that the could manipulate the weather. Could it be that...?
