Kangerluarnaaqspacejamlussuviksuaq (aka Kanger) is a city located on the interior of a fjord, just 25 miles from the edge of a large ice sheet. That said, the microclimate here is actually quite warm, given the surroundings.
Winters average below 0 F / -18 C. Most winter days are frigid and relatively sunny with fairly light winds. Watch out for foehn winds; these furious winds strike suddenly and can reach speeds over 62 mph / 100 kph (although they are most often top out in the 25-40 mph / 40-64 kph range) and can send temperatures skyrocketing from below zero to over 50 F / 10 C in as little as an hour. Snow depth is usually low in winter, rarely amounting to over 10 inches / 25 cm and most often in the 3-7 inch / 7-18 cm range. Cold snaps can also occur, but these have far more warning than foehn winds. On average, the coldest low of the winter is around -40 F / -40 C, and the highest high over 50 F / 10 C. The all time record low (since 1949) is -55.4 F / -48.6 C set on January 7, 1970. The winter record high is 71.8 F / 22.1 C, set on February 21, 1988.
Spring warm-up begins in March, and average highs cross freezing on April 21st. By early May, the ground is more often than not snowless. Spring is still a dry season, although precipitation begins to pick up slightly. Spring weather patterns are stabler, with fewer foehn winds and cold snaps as the season progresses. The first blooms occur in May. The last sub-zero temperature is often recorded in April, and the last day with snow on the ground is often in May. By May, average high temperatures reach 50 F / 10 C, ice days become rare by the end of the month, and the first warm days of the year arrive - May temperatures have been known to reach 68-77 F / 20-25 C during warm spells, which arrive gradually by this time of the year. Foehn winds are extremely rare by May.
Most days throughout summer reach 50 F / 10 C. The 24-hour average is above 50 from June 15 - August 17, allowing tree growth. Average highs range from 55 F / 13 C on the fringes of summer to 64 F / 18 C in mid-July, the height of summer. There is considerable precipitation this time of year, with a good portion occurring in thunderstorms. An average year has 19 thunderstorms, only two of which occur outside of June, July, and August. However, sunshine is ample and winds usually fairly light, meaning that summer days often feel very mild. Temperatures break 68 F / 20 C quite often, and the yearly high is usually 77-86 F / 25-30 C; some of the warmest days of summer feel quite toasty, given the high latitude (67 N). The all time record high is 90.4 F / 32.4 C, set on July 14, 1974.
C. Too cool in summer and too dry in winter, though cold winters are good)
