Subtropical my arse! Tallahassee gets more freezing nights than the outskirts of London does. Most of those places get more freezing nights than the capital of cold, Castlederp.
If having zero air frosts is required to be "subtropical", then really no where in the eastern US except far southern tip of FL qualifies as "subtropical". Orlando gets air frosts ever year, or at least averages at least air frosts ever year. No where in Texas is subtropical either, or the Gulf Coast, as they all get air frosts every year even down to the southern tip of Texas.
Everywhere in the eastern US down to the tip of FL gets annual air frosts. Just some places get more than others. The US is not lucky like Australia with a huge ocean between it and the south pole. If only we could be so lucky.

So what? Much of the rest of the year is hot and steamy; neither place is growing much in the winter. And Castlederg is much more frost prone in the shoulder season (spring and fall) compared to Tallahassee, there's not a big winter-spring difference.

That is mild for the latitude and distance from the sea.
Coldest around here last winter (41"S) at 11m above sea level and about 1 km from the coast, was -5.6C in July, with August and June both getting below -4C.
I was right, then. I said -5 °C. Actually it got to -4.7 °C. Yay.
