This lake is in an intermontane basin at 700m ASL - the current climate station is at 762m ASL at the nearby airfield. Heat bunnies need not apply! Warm it ain't. Scenic flights to NZ's highest mountains and nearby glaciers are worth the trouble:

There is a smallish local skifield, and other skifields within reasonable driving range.

The strong blue colour of the lake contrasts vividly with the tussocky brown surrounding landscape.

Sunshine recording at the current site began in 2003, averaging around 2400 hours so far, about 57% of the recordable. Older site patterns suggest little variation over the year, with a slight increase in late summer and early autumn and a slight decrease in spring. Most winters see several significant snowfalls, and there have been quite large snowfalls on some occasions, though less commonly now. There are about 90 screen frosts per year. Mean wind speeds are lower than in most of New Zealand.

I like the low wind speeds and rainfall and the relatively high sunshine, but it's just too cool. D+.

C- - not awful, but not good in any season except for maybe a couple summer weeks.

Scenery looks depressing. Needs more trees.

Temperatures look comfortable year-round. Probably about 100 fewer hours of sunshine compared to where I currently live, so that's an added bonus.

C. Drier than I would like in all months. Good sun and a beautiful place, plus major mountains/glaciers and huge snowfalls (30m/100ft+ a year)nearby. I was there last week and we got about 10cm/5 inches of snow in town, and the lakes are very low.

No!! - the aridity serves as a contrast to blue skies, deep blue lakes (another very blue one a little south of there) and the mountain colours. Though it is a small settlement a lot of tourist buses go through the area.

It's near the top end of my desired rainfall averages!

One of my favourite areas, and in particular a stimulating change from year-round greenness. Ditto Central Otago.
