As nei mentioned, I'm in a dry summer climate, to only the tall mountains get decent storms in summer. Outside summer, the smaller mountains do enhance precipitation. That's partly why we're wetter than Marseille and drier than Genoa. Last October Cannes got 7 inches from a single storm, the small mountains west of it apparently did a great job at enhancing what was a regular storm cell just a couple dozen miles west of the city.

I mean before the start of the hike or after finishing the hike. Which is worse, taking 1 hour extra to get to trailhead or to get back home.
I prefer aiming straight for the trailhead and making a detour on my way back. Hit the trail at sunrise or, ideally, 30 minutes to 1 hour before, even if it means getting up before 4.

Cool! Sounds like you might be taking a trip to Southern Italy?
Yeah, hopefully a road trip 'round the boot.

Cycas revoluta I believe. They're very common here. That's a rather unusual destination for a prolonged stay, nice to see on here. Or was it a layover? Did you see the big, glitzy city there?

The train was from Munich to Dresden, including a change of trains.
We've seen Dubai, but didn't spend too much time there.

The Emirates are not a country with much beautiful scenery. But i like these Dunes.

Going around these dunes with Sandals was a very dumb idea.

Hmm

A public beach in the Emirates, not something you see very often.
It's mostly just hotel beaches for hotel guests only and private closed off beaches for the wealthy.

The worlds best hotel ?

Back to the Desert

Al Ain

It's a shame that our drive to Al Ain coincided with a "mild day", where the high temperature was only about 39°C when the day before had a high of 44.4°C.

May 27, 2016. 3rd day of 80s. 82F(28C) at time of pics. Haze developed this afternoon.

We are finally, but almost, all leafed out now. I say almost because the American Sycamore is still not. Looks weird now this late. Usually by mid May we all leafed out This year took past that. Oaks just matured last week.

Even the squirrel is like... ITS TOO DAMN HOT I'm gonna just relax right here under the Pine.

My compost pile sits in the shade all day.. So amazing watching this thing turn to dirt. Leaves, Horse Manure, Grass clippings, and kitchen scrap. Let me see if it's cooking inside.

128°F inside. Proper temp for a compost pile is 135°-160°.

Was happy to see 128, see next pic why.

Probe isn't that long so it wasn't even at the center of the pile. So most likely above 135F in there. And it's only been 80s 3 days so not worried. Plenty of time to heat up more. I will turn it this weekend.

Took some pictures this week. All except the last one are in southeast Wisconsin. The last one was in Minneapolis.

A hike on the 21st:

(1) Pond near the entrance

(2) Field a little further in

(3) Went up a hill next to the field and took some pictures at the top. This one is looking west. Too bad I didn’t see the staircase before I got up there.

(4) Looking southwest

(5) Down the hill is another pond.

I took some pictures on top of that hill back in January 2014. You can see the lake in (5) in the second picture since all the leaves are gone. I put them under the spoiler since they aren't spring pictures.

Spoiler
(6)

(7)

Some people like to joke that it’s always cold and snowy in Minnesota. It was “snowing” dandelions.

I'm on the train heading to Surrey to visit some friends, and the rhododendron trees are all in bloom in the woodlands, and along the railway. Couldn't get any good pics though. Looks very summery with the hazy sky.

My 1st year planting Broccoli Rabe so wasn't sure when to Harvest them.. Apparently I planted them too late and they bolt faster I read.

See the flowers? All happened in last 3 days when it's been in the 80s. But still should be edible.
