I don't like thunderstorms, heavy rain and summer humidity. Clouds are fine when it is not freezing. Light rain is OK (but not in summer) because it makes things fresh. Don't really mind winter rain because it's better than snow. But summers have to be mostly sunny and warm. I want to have our summer weather from March to November.
No one is failing to grasp that some people think the UK summers are crap, I get that, but the ridiculous things some people say like you would never be able to go to the beach or ever swim in an outdoor swimming pool are completely ridiculous lol...
Averages are just that, it doesn't mean that every day will be that temperature as well you know. You can have a cool overcast day at 18C then a hot & sunny one at 30C, so no averages certainly don't tell the whole story... Judging by some peoples comments you would think it never got above 23C anywhere during the summer...
Do you think the standard deviation of temperatures is higher in summer than winter in the UK? Interesting in that would be, as you know, the opposite of here. I'm sure the standard deviation on say high temps in summer would still be lower than our standard deviation on winter high temps.

Nobody tries to prove that the UK has hot summers, the threads get derailed by people spouting rubbish about a climate they have never been to, and then are corrected by the locals who actually know what the climate is like.
People have a go at me when I say the NE us has crap winters, and no amount of sun is going to make it feel milder than a winter here when it's windy and cold to start with.

I think summers are more variable here. The record high in Leeds is 14C higher than the average high (August), while the record high in February is 10C higher than the average high.
It seems more common to get random heat spikes in summer. It's not too unusual for us to get something like 2 days of 30C+, but the rest of the month being low 20s.
