I'm in Kansas City and I have been seeing birds congregating the past several weeks, and it's not even mid August; congregating like they do when they are getting ready to fly south.

Has anyone else noticed any signs that we might have an early winter this year?

I'm on the far northern edge of the Kansas City area and I haven't seen any birds. I do think the trees may be shifting a little. Still green, but slightly more yellowish?

Either way, I'm hoping we have an early winter. Can't wait for this heat to be over with.

I've given up all hope for an early and long winter. After four years of disappointment, I'm ready for more.

Being a country boy I watch the birds and animals more than the weather channel. Yep, the birds here have flocked together and are leaving. That's about a month early. Usually we consider it fall when the buzzards flock together and they start moving south. They did this 2 weeks ago. The mesquite trees are putting on lots of bark to the north side of the trunk which indicates a cold winter. Bees are starting to move to more protected areas. It all says early and cold winter.

Can't chalk that up to them being able to read something into the summer weather, cause this summer is far warmer than those two years. Maybe Gawd is telling them what to do as we know he controls all the weather. Maybe Gawd will grant Cambiums and George's wishes this year.

One Issue with an early winter is even if the atmosphere wants to cool down fast the very warm Gulf, West Atlantic and Great Lakes may make it difficult.

Personally I don't believe in these type of signs naturally as it seems every single year they point too cold lol. Or maybe it's just cold lovers who pay attention to this stuff.

Bingo! Like clockwork at this time of year, cold lovers start the hype for winter and try to find any little sign they can of a brutally cold winter. They never give up.

Agreed, I just noticed myself my activity on this forum really picks up in August and dies off in March or so. Sunshine, warmth and long days is boring weather.
