It has now been over a month (32 days) since Vancouver last recorded a freeze. The average low for the period hovers around 0C. Not sure if we've ever gone longer in winter without a freeze. Even the epic torch winter of '14-15 had various freezes in Jan and Feb.

Been warmer than I would have expected here in North Idaho, lately that is. Almost all the snow on the prairie has melted.

Went to run errands on Saturday, and after the first stop, saw that the car thermometer said it was 51 outside. It was too beautiful of a day and warm enough that I rode the bike to the rest of the stops I needed to make that day.

And I just recently purchased a ski rack for the car. Just might have to wait until next winter to do some cross country skiing.

In 2016, our last freeze was on January 9 which is a record. This winter, the first freeze was on December 8 and the last freeze so far on January 1. It would be amazing to set a new record.

Snowfall total forecast Wednesday. WOW! Huge snowstorm for interior.

nice! last time I checked it looked all rain. Gave up bothering to keep checking since it's been a bust so much

In 2016, our last freeze was March 17th. This winter, the first freeze was on Nov 3rd.

I don't think we'll break the record for the earliest "last frost of the season", however Vancouver may have broken the record for the longest period in winter (DJF) without recording a freeze.

FWIW, 00z GFS shows a hard freeze Sat morning with temps around -3C.

Hmm....

I expect the tropospheric response from the significant PV disruption to be a major influence on the tropospheric NH circulation from four to possibly six weeks, which takes us through the end if winter. The initial impact that I expect is to persist the cold temperatures across northern Eurasia including Europe with possible mild temperatures in eastern North America and colder temperatures in western North America. Though perhaps MJO forcing and persistence may offset these induced pattern from the stratospheric PV.

The band of heavier snow went just north of us in Indianapolis last night with some places like Fort Wayne 100 miles to the north/northeast getting close to 5 inches. We got right about an inch on the north side of the city. It ended early enough that roads were pretty clear this morning. Tonight's storm is going more south. Once again we're only forecast an inch or less here but perhaps some freezing rain or drizzle by daybreak which could make things interesting. Last night, the winter weather advisory was a couple counties north of us. Tonight's winter weather advisory is a couple counties south of us.

Where it goes is the big question. Usually eastern North America lol. Though I would love to see it saunter on over someone else for once.
