Interesting choices

Wellington is basically spring year round and Dallas is summer most of the year with 3 okay months (Dec-Feb) LOL

Wellington wouldn't be very interesting as it has one season but at least it is not hot and gets ample precipitation.

I'll go with Wellington for comfortable temperatures and plenty of rain.

Wellington for me. Not the best climate in NZ, but lots of stormy weather makes it interesting.

Dallas is about 500 hours sunnier and has a decent rainfall/ rain day ratio, but has no other advantages for me -too hot, and it gets too cold

Besides, it's much better than Wellington. Wellington is a climate where you need your heater during 7-8 months, while in Dallas you need your AC for 4 months. So Dallas by far.
I would say 4-5 months tops -my climate is colder than Wellington, and the fire (our only heating), is used from about mid may, until about mid september. The first and last few weeks of that period, would only see it used on about half the days.

I come from a cool oceanic northern European climate (yet I live now in a very warm coastal climate SW Europe) and it wasn't rare to use our central heating even in September. We used it normally from early-half May to half-late September, but during few days we had to use it as well even in late May or early September. So practically 8 months a year we had to use our heater... I made a good choice moving from that awful climate.

Anyways, your high temps are higher which is better. You can open your windows during central hours and that will make your house warmer. On the other hand, Wellington has less warm days. I've checked Mouteka and compared it to Wellington, the annual temp is practically the same, you have +2ºC warmer highs and they +2ºC warmer lows. You're also much sunnier so Motueka smashes it for me.

Yes, in Motueka I would use a heater for 5 months at most, but probably they would be 4-5 just as in your case. In Wellington I still would use it for 6-7 months as their highs are significantly colder than yours.
It would be extremely unusual to use heating in march or november here or Wellington -unless there's some medical issue perhaps. Rotterdam is obviously a much colder feeling climate.

Over the coldest 6 months, Welington's high are only 0.7C colder than here, while their highs are 4.3C higher -I'm guessing that Motueka would be the better place for firewood sellers. When using Wellington's stats, use the airport site -Kelburn is a non - standard exposure

Kelburn is fine but is at 126m ASL - the sea level W'gton sites are 0.8C or 0.9C warmer.

As I've said before, the sun mean is close for longterm but 30-year average is 2110 hrs, and with electronic methods would be higher. Also, the eastern suburbs are significantly sunnier than the west where Kelburn is.

Wellington for being pleasant year-round, although I will miss having real summer heat.

the sacrifice is worth it, i think.
