In a nutshell keeping it simple why this heat is happening for those wondering.

National Weather Service New York NY
643 AM EDT Sun Jul 1 2018
Hot and humid weather continues through the end of the week...
Core of strong middle and upper level ridge will remain parked over
the northeast through the end of the week. Deterministic and
ensemble means are in excellent agreement with this pattern and
500 mb heights between 597 and 599 dam overhead.
Look at the 500mb Height maps to see it. And play the loop and watch what happens towards end of week. It shifts back to the West so we get relief.
See the black lines how they push north? That's the Ridge. Those numbers indicate the Heights. The higher they are the more heat that builds. 588+ is pretty much heat wave and summer conditions (depends on location though).. The core which usually is in the Southeast is actually over the northeast which is interesting.
forecast at 3 pm 97°F, dewpoint 74°F = heat index of 109°F. Kinda want see triple-digits, we never get there; heat index doesn't seem real. dewpoint of 74°F doesn't sound humid when the relative humidity is 46%
Our obs shows 85/70 at 9:51am. EWR at 89/70 and LGA at 88/69. We might not make it to 100 unless those dews drop.
Burlington, VT is at 86/73 and Montreal at 83/75 (!)
@11am: 83/74 at Saranac Lake. Might be a record high dp there.
Saranac Lake had a low of 72°F with a dewpoint of 71/71; warmer morning and more humid than New England to the southeast [see my minimum map]. Wonder why it was more humid? Whitefield, a similar frost hollow in the White Mountains at a similar latitude, had a low of 68°F and a dewpoint of 69°F. Still a little more humid than western Massachusetts.
this is a really humid heat wave, wonder why? cause the center of the ridge is so far north? No north-south contrast in humidity at all
79°F in northern NY by the Canadian border?! Looks suspicious + 75°F and 69°F dews right next to each other. Let's check a more local map
no 79°F but there's a 77°F at the border! Wonder if it's from a wetter ground; a lot of northern New England got rain last night or this morning. eh. but the most humid spots are where it didn't rain. Colors are rainfall amounts; black numbers temperatures at 11:30 am, blue dewpoints at the same time.
89/72 at East Hampton
82/71 at Southold (North Shore)
91/75 at Shirley
84/70 at Stony Brook (North Shore)
91/72 at Islip
91/73 at Farmingdale
92/70 at Wantagh
93/71 at JFK
91/69 at Queens
93/68 at LaGuardia (North Shore)
92/68 at Brooklyn
94/74 here
North Shore is noticeably cooler until one nears NYC.
Usually look at the heat index values since it's always higher than the temp but here's the 1pm temps out there.
Officially a heat wave now for Hartford. Day #3 in a row.
