Koppen's system is not crude, in fact it works quite well for cause and effect in terms of air masses, ocean currents, and topography.

Honolulu and such are not tropical precisely
because they are so dry. Tropical trade winds bring moisture, and therefore it's not logical for dry places blocked/shadowed from the effects of those tropical trade winds to be tropical - Koppen got it right for that.
