I was reading the other day about plans to build the Asian Renewable Energy Hub in the Pilbara region of Australia, just east of Port Hedland and inland of 80 Mile Beach. Apparently the area has a particularly good combination of wind resources that are stronger at night as well as the obvious solar resources.

What produces this? Do the winds really tend to blow from the sea at night? That's the other way round from what is more normal I thought.

I don't know the mechanics of it, but having lived and worked on the Pilbara coast, and using Aussie vernacular, yes indeed, the wind blows it's ring out day and night right along the Pilbara coastline, most notably during the winter months. Then of course during the period of high sun, the region is the most Cyclone prone in Australia. I think that project site is about half way between Broome and Port Hedland.
