My dad was a farm boy growing up and had a great interest in the weather in general but also always cared about wind speed and direction, cloud types, etc. in predicting rain. So it was a daily topic of conversation - combined with watching the nightly news and seeing a weather map with actual fronts displayed and I got the weather bug!
One of my high school science fair projects was actually climatology-related looking at temperature trends from 1900 onward for five midwestern states - got me to regionals!
What got me interested in weather first was experiencing Hurricane Hugo, I lived near Charleston, Sc at the time.
Then my interest expanded because I loved snow, I would religiously watch the weather channel during winter for any chance of snowfall.
I guess because of the rarity of snow in Augusta it had a specialness about it, it made it that much more exciting. I would be very envious of the kids that lived in the north where it's regularly a winter wonder land.
There were only a small number of snow events in Augusta during the 1990s and I made it my childhood mission to fully experience them when they happened, I so happened to learn a lot of other weather facts just by watching the weather channel.
