The worst would the hurricanes that struck in the olden days. A hurricane strike would be far worse nowadays. The NYC/Long Island/New Jersey area is overdue for a hurricane.
I was in Hurricane Rita in 2005 at my mothers. Hours of things hitting the house in the middle of the night, a 110 foot tall pine tree fell and grazed the house, pictures fell off the wall, the house shook, VERY scary My mother had to come stay with us for four weeks till she got her electricity back. Then there was Ike in 2008, we left Houston, but part of it still came to mothers, not as bad as Rita there, but Ike sure did a number in our neighborhood.
Hugo was probably the longest scary time, but we also had a tornado right after we moved into our house in the 1970's that destroyed our front roof. Then there was the ice storm that caused us to move into a motel because it was so cold in our house. We have a heat pump. We have an old dial phone that we use when the electricity goes off. It got so cold in our home that when I pulled the number forward, I had to push it back in place. I was afraid to stay in our home one more night, because I was concerned we might freeze to death.

hugo lashed us for 12 hours and 6 of thoes hours were with sustained winds of 140+ mph and gust reaching 200+!!!
Other events such as June 2007 storms, 327mm in 24 hours in August 1986 and the November 1984 severe thunderstorms that caused mudslides and houses to collapse in the eastern suburbs.
The ice storm last December in southern NH was a really bad weather related disaster. Many people lost power for 1-2 weeks. The power crews have been agressively cutting trees near the lines so far this year... They have been zealous with regard to that.
Not sure about the area I live in but just to the west and northwest was in 1999 with Floyd. Catastrophic flooding resulted from almost 20 inches of rain. I knew people who evacuated our area and couldn't get home for days because of the flooding.
Where I live now, 2004 NJ flooding. It was pretty significant; a lot of small dams burst.
In 1988-89 when I lived in NC there was a significant ice storm. I was without power for a couple of days and the roads were closed for a week. This is especially memorable because I'd just moved there and my husband was out of town on business for the week. I didn't know anyone in the neighborhood.
The worst ever was the 1972 Agnes hurricane. I lived in Wilkes-Barre, PA at the time. The entire state was declared a disaster area. I haven't personally seen anything like it since. It reminds me of Katrina.
