ATLANTA, July 3 (UPI) -- U.S. cable network the Weather Channel has announced an end to the smooth jazz playing in the background of its "Local on the 8s" segments.

Geoffrey Darby, who joined the network as executive vice president of programming in February, said the segments will now feature soft rock songs instead of the smooth jazz that has accompanied the local weather segments for years, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Friday.

That's awful! I loved the smooth jazz! I even bought both of the TWC music CD's.

I also liked the smooth jazz. Instead of switching to just soft rock they should also include Hip-Hop/R&B, Country, Pop, etc. beats.

With the interactive local on the 8s with DirectTV, maybe soon they'll allow you to pick your background music.

I'm not a major jazz fan but I prefer it to soft rock, jazz did seem to be a good fit to local on the 8's!

Local on the 8s is about the only reason I watch TWC these days, the channel has been heading downhill for much of this decade. RIP TWC 1982-2001.

Probably since NBC bought them!

I will miss the music. Like you said, Local on the 8's was the main reason I watched TWC as well.

I know I'm in the minority here but that chalk-on-a-blackboard (to me) dissonance was the reason I stopped even flicking on TWC for local weather some years ago. Now I, again, have one reason to acknowledge a TV in the house, to flip TWC Local on when getting ready for work

The weather channel has gone thru many revisions this past year, and unfortunatly I now find I can't stand the changes. They let go some of the best weather tv personalities and have tried to change the station into something resembling CNN or something. I used to be a weather channel junkie, but they broke me from the addiction quickly. NOw I only turn there to see if there is something major heading my way, and I stay on the channel as little as I possibly can.

It'll be interesting to hear the songs that they have on there. I like the music they have on there now, but if it's some of the old soft rock songs, I'd love that. I actually still like TWC cause I like Storm Stories or Full Force Nature or It could Happen Tomorrow. I still despise them for getting rid of a couple good people just cause they had a mind of their own and they couldn't brainwash them into their way of thinking. That was just plainly wrong.
