It seems like here in the Northeast United States it is cloudy nearly every day in the winter. I have seen many days where the weatherman said it was going to be sunny but clouds quickly move in and it is so grey and depressing. I have seen a completely clear sky turn to cloudy in 5 minutes.
What is it about winter that causes so many days to be grey and cloudy?
Well look at it this way all them cloudy days get made up for by beautiful landcape and beautiful seasons. We go through quite a few gray days here in WI as well during the winter.
No one has explained why is it is so much cloudier in the winter than the other seasons.
Maybe it has something to do with high pressure cold fronts from much further north, full of much drier air, clashing with the moisture of the ocean and Great Lakes. Then, those fronts tend to stall over the area of the mid-atlantic northeast.
Besides, in Maryland, late Autumn usually seems to be the worst period of cloudiness to me. The middle of Winter is when it clears out a lot more because it's colder.
I agree about the Great Lakes influence. We get lake effect snow and rain, so it makes sense that we'd get lake effect clouds. All the cold air coming out of Canada has to pass over the lakes first.

Winter is our rainy season?
