Yes but you also have to take into account the type of people you are inviting. Certain people have friends and family more likely to bail, where others have some that are more like to do anything they can to show.

I would check out theknot.com's North Carolina message board. They are super helpful for specific wedding questions.
They say 15% won't show for a local wedding but up to 50% won't show for a destination wedding (wedding where most guests will have to travel to the venue).
I would think the percentage of no-shows might be higher for a large wedding than a small one, simply because those extra hundreds of people probably aren't very close to the bride or groom.

I'd agree with that estimate... our wedding planner was pretty much dead on when she said around 30% to 35% won't attend especially if most of your guests are out-of-towners. We invited 260 and had around 170 for our final number. Obviously not as large as what you're looking at, but then again you're family and friends may be the exception to the rule
You may get a lot of no-shows, but you may get a lot of uninvited guests. My husband was born in India, as were a lot of his recent immigrant friends. Maybe it's different with folks who've been here longer, but we had friends rsvp'ing for folks who weren't invited. My husband told me that this kind of thing was expected and that we couldn't "uninvite" them like we might at a non-Indian wedding. People rsvp'ed for visiting parents, siblings, etc.
i concur about the percentage attending usually being around 2/3 of the numbers invited. that number may fluctuate based on travel & other items happening at the time (i.e., we will only be able to attend a friend's ceremony because my husband's grad school graduation is the same day & i know it has affected their numbers for friends who are graduating or have family/friends graduation).
we invited about 240 & had 140 there, which we appreciated considering a good 60% of our invited guests were from VA & MA. if you have many international travelers, that could take those numbers down. given the large numbers you are inviting, i'd recommend making sure to send out your invites early & make sure you have an RSVP date that's probably at least 3 weeks prior to the wedding to account for those who you will have to hunt down for a response.
How many RSVP's have you received. That should give you an estimate.
