I currently live in Texas and have been offered a job in the West Palm Beach area. The job pays an annual salary of $34,000. I am not to familiar with the area but from what I've read online thus far, it seems to be pretty expensive. Will the salary mentioned allow for me to rent a decent, safe place and live somewhat comfortable in the area? Thanks for any input.

This apartment ratings website might be helpful for you. From what I've read the places people like seem to be; East Boynton Beach, West Lake Worth, Jupiter, Wellington and Delray Beach. If you want to be in West Palm Beach you might look at these neighborhoods for apartments, Flamingo Park, Breakers West, and El Cid.

Where are you in Texas and how much is your rent there? General comparisons show Florida to be a bit more expensive. This site is pretty handy comparing salaries from one place to another.

As far as crime this site tracks crime by the day, so you can watch which areas are having more crime.
Before you sign any lease be sure and do a search of the sex offender registry (site below). Ya don't want to end up living next to a perv. Also take a look at this older thread, as someone was asking similar questions about safe areas. Good Luck to you.

IMO unless there's significant room to make more money, it wouldn't be worth the move.

$34k is decent but not great. Assuming there are benes at all like insurance taken out, you'll probably be taking home an average, $1050 every two weeks. Roughly $2100 a month. Typically you want to spend no more than 1/3 of your take home on rent to be "comfortable". Thats $700 in rent. You will NOT get a heck of a lot for $700 in west palm. You will probably find an apartment, maybe in a complex you may not be thrilled with. To be someplace nicer you need $1000 plus a month, on rent only, not mentioning electric, cable, etc. For $1200 you may find someplace that includes water/cable. Its also full season right now and rentals are being snatched up FAST.

Something a LOT of people do is look to rent in Martin County or Port St Lucie and make the commute. Depending on where you work in west palm beach, the commute can be a fairly easy 45 - 55 minutes down I95 from somewhere near the highway in PSL, 30-40 minutes from Martin County, Palm City or Stuart near I95. Rentals are far cheaper in PSL due to massive overbuilding in the boom, depending on what you want. Stuart will be a bit closer, and there are several newer complexes near 76/kanner and Cove Rd, right near an I95 on ramp. Looking on craigslist will help you find them, they usually advertise tons.

Thanks for all of your comments. All that you have mentioned is what I am concerned most about. The job offered is at the West Palm V.A so there are benefits. I am trying to figure out a way to make it all work. I just don't see a good solution. :-(

I guess it all depends on what you want and what your future goals are, and what the job is, and if there are other jobs in Florida where that potential time at the WPB VA would look great on your resume. And that commute from PSL and Martin is very very common and doable for most people. You could also look into being a roommate in someone's home. Thats another good thing to check craigslist for. Is the resume worth a year or two of a commute? Will the job in WPB open you up to openings in PSL? For example.

Those are all valid questions. My plan is to work while pursuing a degree in medicine so I am not above a temporary situation to get me where I need to be. Can you give me a little more information about Port St. Lucie/Stuart or is there a forum for that area as well?

Under Florida there is a forum for Port St Lucie, Vero Sebastian etc. For some reason city data thinks that includes Martin County (it doesn't) but thats where people in or interested in Martin County also post.
