Hello--my husband is considering taking a job in West Palm Beach. We now live in northern Fairfield County in Connecticut. After spending hours searching on these boards, I've become apprehensive about a potential move there. We have 3 young kids and I want them to be as safe there as we feel here. We are considering living in Wellington, as that seems to be very family-friendly. Yet I've seen numerous posts about gangs, sexual offenders and crime (not in Wellington per se, but in the surrounding areas).

Has anyone moved from Connecticut to the West Palm Beach area with a family? Do you love it, or do you regret it?

I didn't move from Connecticut to West Palm Beach, but Wellington and Jupiter are pretty much "the" family friendly areas in Palm Beach County.

Wellington is GREAT! Come and have a look. The only "crime" may be in the new mall parking lot and that is very far from the residential area. I have lived in Southend, West Palm for twenty years and NEVER have had a problem or even a situation with "gangs". Yes gangs exsist but the so called problem is way over blown.

Gangs are not overblown, I live in West Palm Beach on Palm Beach Lakes Blvd, and have seen them in my own neighborhood and on the main blvd. If you live in Wellington you will not experience them but in many sections of the county itself you will.

Just because they're not in your gated community on the inter coastal does not mean they don't exist.

You should look into Jupiter, excellent area, but very pricey.

We recently moved to the area in September, we started in Wellington renting for two months and then found a more permanent place in Royal Palm beach (8 miles away from where we were)
WE love it, all three of us and when my son came up from Montreal to visit for Xmas he loved it to!!!!!

It is beautiful here, I have not seen one of these "gangs" yet we live in a good neighborhood with nice families and lots of kids. We are on 1.5 acres with plenty of elbow room.
The shopping is great, I have already found doctors, vets, farrier (we are horse people)
I have never met so many friendly people. I certainly never met to many in Montreal. That place was full of arrogant, ignorant Quebecois. I am Canadian and and I hated that place and I hated the cold attitude and weather.

The only complaint I have here is the services sometimes are not working the way they should phone, cable, internet..I have had problems with all of them now. It was all taken care of in the end. Take yesterday all of a sudden my phones stopped working, it took 24 hours for them to fix them but they are working again.

Other than that, the weather is beautiful and peaceful, we drive down to Jupiter and walk our dogs on the dog beach (with free scoop bags) every chance we get.
My kids are big now but if I was going to raise kids I wouldn't have any issues doing it here.
People are so quick to say oh it's bad, oh!! the danger- danger- danger!!!!!

I would love for some of those people to give me an example of something that actually happened to THEM personally.
We lived in Nassau Bahamas, there we had razor wire around our cement fencing with electric gates and the USA Embassy coming three times a day to check that our property was secure and safe. The next door neighbors (with no embassy protection) were held up with a gun in their face and people stole our car from the beach.

I think people need to move around a bit before they can start to say "danger, scary, bad, etc..geez.
So, putting that aside now,

Welcome to Florida!!!!!

You are going to love it here.

Just rent for a while as with the rest of the country the prices of homes are coming WAY down...(oh scary), lol..that part is great for people like us as we will benefit from it and in a year or so be able to buy a home that we can actually afford. Did you know the median income in the State is 43,000?

Rent for a year or two and get yourself what ever you want for at least 50% off peak 2005 prices.

Bring the family and enjoy, I recommend Royal Palm Beach if you want to rent with some property for the kids to run around in. Our yard is so nice and we have a nice house we are paying 1400.00 monthly for it.
PM me if you want any other info on stuff, more than glad to help!!!!!

Get packing!

I have never heard about Wellington's "gang" problem. A bunch of wannabe white boys does not make a gang!
