HUNTINGTON -- Five area West Virginia counties found themselves in the bottom 10 of the third annual County Health Rankings, released Tuesday by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
The rankings include a snapshot of each county detailing health behaviors such as physical inactivity, smoking and drinking, as well as social and economic factors including children in poverty and unemployment. It also took into account physical environment, including the percentage of all restaurants that are fast food establishments.
At the end of those calculations, Cabell County ranked number 46 of 55 counties, with Wayne, Lincoln, Logan and Mingo even lower. Boyd County, Ky., ranked No. 88 of 120 Kentucky counties, while Lawrence County, Ohio, ranked last among all counties in Ohio.
What are other states doing that wv isn't? Is it simply economic status or is it something else.
While poverty levels play a role, a lot of it is lifestyle. Just from simple observation, many in WV make poor lifestyle choices in regards to healthful living.
Note that the five counties mentioned are amongst the ten lowest "in West Virginia." There will ALWAYS be ten lowest in WV, just as there will always be ten highest (and, of course, 35 in the middle).
The point of the article, I think, was that five of the ten lowest in the state are located in the vicinity of Beckley. Economics, education, demographics are probably all contributing factors.
Also, note that the survey does not measure "health" directly, but rather measures factors which the report's authors assume correlate with health (such as the number of fast food restaurants).

don't you mean huntington & So.WV in general; Raleigh Co. isn't even in the bottom 10, though there is plenty of room for improvement
