In early November I will be driving through WV. I will be entering the state on I77 at Parkersburg, and due to my final destination , I will be leaving VW at Princeton.

As far as “big cities “ go I plan to visit Parkersburg, Huntington, Charleston, Beckley, and perhaps, if I’m in the mood to take a swing to the southeast, Lewisburg and White Sulphur Springs.

But I don’t want to spend all my time on the interstate. Do any of you have any recommendations for nice small towns to visit off I77.

I am looking forward to this trip because I have about 5 days to do exactly what I want to do ( this is almost impossible for me to believe). I was born in Wheeling and WV is on top of my list of places to retire. I’m looking for a place 5-10 miles out of a town (sound familiar?). I’m not even too picky about the size of the town as long as it seems like a nice enough town”

But retirement is 4 years off, so on this trip I am looking at towns and areas not particular pieces of property.

Thanks to you all for making this such an great forum I will report back if I have anything interesting to say.

I think Athens is nice, it's on Rte 20 about 10 or 15 miles north of Princeton, so it won't be much out of your way.

If at all possible, make the side-trip to Lewisburg. If you have time, take 219 north from Lewisburg and check out Hillsboro and Marlinton.
