I know no one was serious about taking railroad ties..............I plan to use them as a retaining wall/flower bed for an area I had to raise the ground level for a pool. It looks like my fence is floating b/c I wanted to keep the top level. so the ties would create the wall to hold dirt/landscaping and hide the weird looking gap.

Yes it is , and you should NOT burn them, as it creates a toxic smoke.

I recently helped one of my farmer buddies build a fence using railroad ties as post. They worked great for that.
